Abstract

Educating diabetic patients about oral health care is of utmost importance for dental personnel. The aim of the study was to interpret oral health in diabetic patients by means of a literature review. The PubMed database was searched to identify studies published in the last five years that addressed the relationship between diabetes and oral health, and 15 articles were finally selected. It was an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study. It was found that regular follow-up with the dentist is essential to maintain optimal oral health, especially because of the additional difficulties they face due to increased blood sugar. He emphasized that in addition to regular dental care, it is essential to keep glucose levels under control through frequent visits. Likewise, the relationship between poor oral hygiene and the appearance of oral diseases, such as carious lesions, gingivitis and periodontitis, highlights the importance of education and prevention in the medical and dental care of diabetic patients. It highlights that oral health promotion and prevention should be a constant and understandable concern for diabetic patients, addressing aspects such as proper nutrition to control glucose levels and proper brushing techniques to maintain good oral health.
