Abstract

Introduction: Raynaud's disease is a condition characterized by episodes of vasospasm in blood vessels and is common in cold regions. More studies on its risk factors are needed.

Objective: The objective of the study was to associate Raynaud's disease with emotional stress, drug consumption and work with vibration or repetitive trauma in patients from Ecuador.

Methods: The study corresponded to the relational research level and was classified as analytical, observational, prospective and cross-sectional. The study sample comprised 87 patients from Ecuador, selected by simple random sampling. The Phi coefficient was used.

Results: According to the Phi statistical test, only a strong and statistically significant positive association was found between the presence of emotional stress and Raynaud's disease (Phi=0.820; p<0.001), so for this variable the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. However, for the other two variables (drug intake and occupational exposure to vibration/trauma) Phi values close to 0 and p-values greater than 0.05 indicated that there were no statistically significant correlations with Raynaud's disease in this population sample.

Conclusions: The alternative hypothesis (H1) put forward is only fulfilled for the association between emotional stress and Raynaud's disease, but not for the other variables initially considered. Further studies would be required to rule out or confirm these correlations.
