Abstract

Introduction: Moyers class III syndrome is characterized by arch length discrepancy, skeletal problems, muscle dysfunction, dental problems and facial profile of the patient.

Purpose: To evaluate the skeletal and articular changes of Moyers class III syndrome after treatment with twin blocks.

Methods: An intervention study of quasi-experimental type, before and after modality, without control group, was performed in 93 patients from the teaching Clinic Dentistry specialties “Manuel Cedeño”, during January 2018 to April 2021. All cases were fitted with twin class III blocks.

Results: With the use of the twin blocks the maxillary length increased (49.223 ± 3.4806), the position of the ramus improved (73.265 ± 3.5793) and the location of the porion (37.381 ± 2.6284); in addition, facial convexity was corrected (4.800 ± 7.1800), and the anteroposterior position of the maxilla (SNA= 79.410 ± 3.1429) and the mandible (SNB= 77.948 ± 1.1491). A class I maxillomandibular relationship was achieved (ANB= 1.397 ± 1.1491) and an adequate anatomical joint relationship was established (Fg-S= 18.423; Cma-FH= -0.345; Cd-PVt= 30.478).

Conclusions: Twin blocks allow correction of skeletal class III by modifying the internal structure, maxillomandibular and temporomandibular joint position of patients with Moyers class III syndrome.
