Abstract

Introduction: the internationalization of higher medical education faces the challenge of consolidating double degree programs, but limitations persist in academic management and faculty professionalization.

Objective: to establish the theoretical foundations for a faculty professionalization strategy aimed at strengthening internationalization in double-degree programs in Medicine.

Methods: A qualitative narrative review of the literature was conducted between 2011 and 2026 in Scopus, SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar, complemented by theses and books by Cuban and international authors. A total of 35 relevant references were included and analyzed using synthesis-analysis, induction-deduction, and documentary analysis techniques.

Results: five theoretical foundations were identified: philosophical (dialectical-materialist), pedagogical (Martian-Marxist tradition), psychological (Vygotsky's cultural-historical paradigm), sociological (dialectical relationship between education and society), and Medical Education Sciences (curricular theory and education at work). Table 1 summarizes, for each foundation, the reference authors, the central contribution to the strategy, and its possible operationalization in double-degree programs.

Conclusions: the systematized foundations constitute the theoretical basis for designing a faculty professionalization strategy that responds to the demands of international medical education, integrates Cuban pedagogical traditions with the realities of the national context, and strengthens the quality of double-degree programs in Medicine.
