Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus poses a clinical challenge due to its alterations in insulin regulation and glycemic control, driving the search for complementary therapies based on natural remedies. The aim of this study was to determine, through a systematic literature review, the scientific evidence on the regulatory action of cinnamon on insulin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. An exhaustive search was conducted in the PubMed database using an algorithm that combined indexed terms and free text, including studies published between 2004 and 2025; from the 55 identified results, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses meeting predefined criteria for population, intervention, and glycemic outcomes were selected, following the PRISMA 2020 methodology and evaluating methodological quality and risk of bias. The results show that cinnamon supplementation is associated with reductions in fasting glucose, improvements in hemoglobin A1c, and insulin sensitivity, although considerable heterogeneity is observed in terms of dosage, duration of intervention, and formulations used, resulting in mixed outcomes in some studies. In conclusion, cinnamon shows potential modulating effects on insulin regulation and a positive impact on glycemic control, but more rigorous and standardized clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in the comprehensive management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
