Abstract

Introduction: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory pathology that affects the supporting tissues of the tooth, including the gingiva, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and root cementum. Chronic periodontitis affects approximately 47% of adults over 30 years of age worldwide.
Objective: To analyze the benefits of propolis in periodontal disease.
Methods: A literature review was carried out following the PRISMA 2020 methodology, in the databases of PubMed, LILACS, and Elsevier from Science Direct, to answer the guiding question: ¿What are the benefits of propolis in periodontal disease?
Results: Sixteen articles were reviewed, nine were excluded based on the title, two based on the information found in the abstract and one after reading the full text articles; four articles were included in the final literature review. It was interpreted that propolis has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that make it effective in the prevention and treatment of dental diseases such as caries and periodontal disease.
Conclusions: Propolis is effective in periodontal disease due to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties Future studies are suggested such as identifying the mechanisms of action of propolis at the cellular and molecular level and evaluating its effectiveness in combination with other conventional treatments.
