Abstract

Introduction: The odontoma is a complex dental pathology that represents a dental problem that requires further study.

Objective: The present study had the objective of characterizing composite odontomas by means of a case study of an Ecuadorian patient.

Methodology: The research was of epidemiological design, framed at the descriptive level and consisted of the development of a clinical dental case study in which the unit of study was a 19-year-old Ecuadorian patient with a compound odontoma at the mandibular level, who underwent an in-depth examination.

Results: The clinical case was characterized, in which the flap was repositioned with vertical mattress stitches for interdental papillae and simple stitches in the discharges, both mesial and distal, antibiotics and analgesics were prescribed, and the histopathology analysis also diagnosed a compound odontoma, which ruled out that the lesion was of a malignant neoplastic type.

Conclusion: The authors conclude that the etiology of odontomas is unknown, but some authors describe possible associations with localized trauma to the primary tooth, inflammatory or infectious processes, hyperactivity of the odontoblasts and changes in the genetic component, whether related to genetic conditions or not. Finally, the authors believed there are several possibilities for future studies on composite odontomas, so here they suggest several of them.
