Abstract

Oromandibular dystonia is a rare disorder, but with a significant impact on quality of life, originating from various genetic and acquired etiologies. The aim of the study was to interpret the effectiveness of botulinum toxin (BTX-A/B) in the treatment of oromandibular dystonia through a systematic literature review. A qualitative and descriptive systematic review was conducted using databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, SciElo, and LILACS. Through advanced search strings, 200 studies were identified, of which 14 met the inclusion criteria and were selected for analysis. The results indicated that the use of BTX is highly effective in reducing the symptoms of oromandibular dystonia, especially in patients over 50 years old, where an efficacy of 75% was observed in reducing pain and other symptoms. The positive effects of the treatment were evident within a period of 4 to 12 weeks, improving problems of jaw closure and opening, facilitating eating, and reducing pain, with minimal side effects. It is concluded that botulinum toxin (BTX-A/B) is an effective treatment for oromandibular dystonia, especially in older populations, and significantly contributes to improving patients' quality of life by reducing symptoms and promoting essential functions such as eating and speaking.
