Abstract

The odontogenic keratocyst, being the third most common cyst, exhibits a high recurrence rate. Among the conservative treatment methods are decompression and marsupialization, involving the opening and suturing of the cyst membrane to allow drainage. The aim of this study was to interpret, through a literature review, the conservative treatment of odontogenic keratocysts and their adjuvant therapy. The study was descriptive, observational, cross-sectional, and retrospective, relying on hermeneutics to interpret the literature review conducted. Data collection was performed by reviewing documents in databases such as Academic Google, PubMed, SciELO, and Mendeley, using specific keywords and a Boolean operator. After applying these selection criteria, a final sample of 15 articles was obtained. Fifteen scientific articles were investigated for the different conservative treatments performed for the excision and complete eradication of the lesion. The results obtained from the majority of selected treatments were decompression of the lesion, followed by enucleation of the lesion and postoperative radiographic control, followed by marsupialization together with enucleation and radiographic control. It was concluded that conservative treatments alone showed recurrence, so the use of adjuvants such as 5-fluorouracil is recommended, in which no significant systemic alterations have been evidenced as in the case of Carnoy's solution.
