Alcohol consumption among young people in the neighborhood of La palmira in Salcedo, Ecuador

Abstract

Introduction: Alcohol consumption is one of the main risk factors leading to detrimental health effects and represents a significant problem for young people.

Objective: To describe alcohol consumption among young people.

Methods: This was a descriptive, prospective, observational, descriptive and cross-sectional research study. A survey was developed to 85 young people from "La Palmira" neighborhood, in Salcedo, Ecuador to describe their alcohol consumption.

Results: It was found that almost half of the respondents stated that they did consume alcohol (47 %); there was a predominance of male sex (58 %) in the population studied; one fifth stated that the age at which they first consumed alcohol was between 10 and 15 years of age; more than one third of the respondents state that they consume alcohol at popular festivals; 18% consume alcohol almost every day; one third of the respondents always had such conflict and 70 % (n=60) at least sometimes had them; more than three quarters stated that they could not enjoy social and family events without consuming alcohol; more than half of the respondents (59 %) did not consider alcoholism as a disease; finally, a very low percentage (18%) stated that they need professional help to stop alcohol consumption.

Conclusions: It was concluded that alcohol consumption is excessive in these young people and starts at very early ages.
