Abstract

Introduction: Hypothyroidism, a condition caused by insufficient thyroid function, can be classified according to severity into different levels.

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare the severity of hypothyroidism according to sex in patients from a clinic in Babahoyo, Ecuador.

Methods: The study was carried out in March 2023 and was observational, analytical, cross-sectional and retrospective. The study population consisted of 52 patients from a clinic in Babahoyo, Ecuador. The U-Mann-Whitney statistical test was used with the SPSS 27 statistical software.

Results: The patient's sex variable showed a mean standard error of 0.066 and a standard deviation of 0.474 while the severity of hypothyroidism variable had a standard error of 0.111 and a standard deviation of 0.800. When comparing severity by sex, the range measures indicated a worse condition in women (mean range 26.9 vs. 25.68 in men). The mean ranks were 26.90 for women and 25.68 for men. In addition, the total sum of ranks for women (941.50) was higher than the total sum for men (436.50), However, the Mann-Whitney U test confirmed that this apparent difference was not statistically significant (p=0.769).

Conclusions: There is insufficient evidence to suggest an effect of sex on the severity of hypothyroidism in patients of this clinic in Babahoyo. Further studies are suggested to determine whether or not sex differences exist among Ecuadorian patients with this condition.
