Profiles in learning and memory from neuroscience to biomedicine

Abstract

Introduction: The analysis and reflection on fundamental topics, related to learning and memory have always been the subject of study by philosophers and scientists. This review addresses topics related to learning and memory, including philosophical aspects, theories, the KIBRA molecule, imaging, cognitive impairment due to SARS-CoV-2, TLR9 receptors, “conceptual neurons,” the hippocampus, and domoic acid.

Objective: To discuss relevant concepts in memory and learning linked to health science, education, and biomedicine in various areas of knowledge, in accordance with current guidelines.

Methods: The PubMed, Scopus, Ebsco, SciElo, and Google Scholar databases were reviewed, and content on learning and memory processes, as well as the factors that alter them, was selected.

Development: The possible mechanisms of learning and memory, and the pathologies that explain their deterioration, were presented holistically. Emphasis was also placed on the possible entry of knowledge into the human mind, types of memory and their relationship with the hippocampus, the KIBRA-PKMζ link, “concept neurons,” viral influence, the participation of TLR receptors, and anterograde amnesia.

Conclusions: Advances in learning and memory allow for a critical appreciation of their contributions to biomedical research.
