Abstract

The central Sierra region of Ecuador boasts a wealth of flora and, more importantly, ancestral knowledge of medicinal plant use. However, there is a noticeable lack of interest in research in the fields of ethnobotany and ethnomedicine in this area. To address this issue, a study was conducted to characterize the use of native medicinal plants in the Patate canton. A quantitative assessment was performed to document the relative importance of these species and estimate the current state of traditional knowledge among the local population. Thanks to its exceptional environmental and geographical conditions, this region exhibits a remarkable floral richness. Through 150 random surveys of individuals aged 30 to 88, information was collected on 73 species belonging to 37 botanical families. Among the most prominent are chamomile, plantain, and oregano, widely used by the population to treat infectious, respiratory, and gastrointestinal conditions, as well as for pain relief. These findings have been classified and refined to facilitate broader future research, potentially aimed at the commercial use of these plants in treating the diseases recommended by the local population.
