Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is generally associated with smoking.

Objective: To assess the relative risk of developing COPD in smokers in a hospital in Ecuador.

Methods: The study had a cohort design in which the Relative Risk was calculated in a population of 131 subjects from a hospital in Ecuador, using the Chi-square test and its p-value.

Results: Overall, 49.6 % of the study population did not have COPD (N= 65), while 50.4 % did (N= 66). Among non-smokers (N= 71), 69.0% did not have COPD (N= 49) and 31.0 % did (N= 22). Among smokers, of the 60 participants, 26.7 % did not have COPD (N= 16) and 73.3% did (N= 44). Smokers had a 6.125 times higher risk of developing COPD compared to non-smokers. The 95 % confidence interval for this estimate ranged from 2.859 to 13.121, indicating a significant association between smoking and COPD. The Chi-square value was 23.328 and the asymptotic significance (bilateral) was<0.01.

Conclusions: Since all statistical tests strongly indicated that the association between smoking and the presence of COPD was highly statistically significant in the study population. These results support the conclusion that smoking is strongly associated with an increased risk of developing COPD in this sample.
