Abstract

Introduction: Bone-tooth discrepancies are an alteration of occlusion in which the positions of the teeth do not adequately correspond to the positions of the maxillary bones.
Objective: To analyze parafunctional habits as an etiological factor in patients with bone-tooth discrepancies according to the angular classification, by means of a review of the literature.
Methods: It was an exploratory study that used hermeneutics to interpret the bibliographic review of 62 scientific articles from the PubMed database, which after purification remained at 41, focused on the answers to six scientific questions previously formulated.
Results: It was found that, in the field of dentistry, bone-to-tooth discrepancies are an anomaly that can have a negative impact on both the appearance and function of the teeth. It was found that parafunctional habits can act as an important etiological factor in dentistry, since their presence can cause changes in the orofacial structures, as well as the appearance of oral pathologies.
Conclusions: The presence of parafunctional habits manages to increase the load on the teeth and maxillary bones, which can contribute to the discrepancy between the position of the teeth and the underlying bones. These habits can have negative consequences for dental and periodontal health. Future studies are proposed that would contribute to a better understanding of the role of parafunctional habits in the development of bone-to-tooth discrepancies and the identification of new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of these conditions.
