Abstract

Introduction: Injuries are commonly associated with sports practice and are usually studied from the medical perspective without considering the role of the psychological factor.

Objective: To determine the perception of sports kinesiologists on the role of the psychological factor in a sports injury according to the dominant mental states in this process.

Methods: A mixed cross-sectional study was carried out. Through a non-probabilistic sampling, 57 kinesiologists with experience in the sports field, 44 men and 13 women, between 25 and 51 years old, were surveyed. Subsequently, a qualitative analysis was carried out based on a semi-structured interview with 18 sports kinesiologists, participants in the previous stage, all male, between 26 and 45 years of age, and with work experience ranging from 4 to 17 years.

Results: The importance of the psychological factor in an injury was pointed out, mainly associated to emotional states of anxiety, fear and depression. This influence was linked to specific moments of the injury (occurrence and re-injury) which should be observed as a process.

Conclusions: The results suggest the need to implement training strategies, theoretical and practical, linked to psychology, in the field of sports injuries, to facilitate interdisciplinary work covering the various dimensions involved in these traumas.
