Abstract

Objective: To analyze the effect of agile methodologies on the development of socioemotional competencies (SEC) in students at a Peruvian university.

Methods: The study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. A total of 104 students participated, divided into two equivalent groups: 52 in the experimental group and 52 in the control group. Pretests and posttests were administered to measure students’ perceived development of SEC before and after the intervention. The experimental group was exposed to agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, Lean), while the control group continued with traditional methodologies. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Z and Levene tests).

Results: Prior to the intervention, both groups showed low and homogeneous scores (pretest means: experimental = 3.73; control = 4.12). After implementing agile methodologies, the experimental group achieved a mean score of 16.04 compared to 12.23 in the control group, reflecting a statistically significant difference of 3.81 points (Z = 8.965; p < 0.001). Moreover, 46.2% of students in the experimental group scored 16, indicating a high level of SEC development, whereas the control group showed concentration in mid-range scores such as 11 (26.9%) and 12 (38.5%).

Conclusions: The implementation of agile methodologies significantly enhanced the development of SEC, strengthening participants’ self-regulation, communication, teamwork, and empathy. Furthermore, this improvement contributed positively to students’ overall health by promoting emotional well-being, reducing academic stress, and fostering healthy interpersonal relationships.
