Abstract

The intrauterine device (IUD) is a reversible and effective contraceptive method widely used worldwide, but its use has been associated with side effects that may affect mental health, including depression. The aim of this study was to describe depression as a side effect of the IUD in the Ecuadorian population. A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional, and prospective study was conducted, involving 20 women who use the IUD. Data collection was carried out through structured surveys with a Likert scale, evaluating variables such as depressive symptoms, acne outbreaks, mood alterations, and long-term side effects. The results indicated that 40 % of the participants reported depressive symptoms, 35 % presented acne outbreaks, and 50 % experienced mood alterations, while 35 % continued with these symptoms after more than seven months of IUD use. It is concluded that there is a possible association between IUD use and the onset of depressive symptoms, highlighting the need for further research to understand this relationship and the importance of medical follow-up to identify and manage mental health-related side effects in IUD users.
