Abstract

Introduction. Health response to sudden disasters refers to the provision of emergency services during or immediately after the disaster, where vital activities such as search and rescue of the injured are carried out, to offer first medical care to victims.

Objective. Describe the updated theoretical foundations on the concepts, theories and practices related to the organization of emergency medical teams for response to sudden disasters.

Methods. An information search was designed from various electronic sources, institutional archives and libraries. Sources were consulted such as the International Disaster Database (EM-DAT), Médecins Sans Frontiéres (MSF) site - Humanitarian Medical Organization: MSF, International Medical Corps (IMC), as well as academic studies and regulatory documents. Information was accessed on the evolution of emergency medical teams, the response of the health sector to disasters and the importance of coordination in the effective response of health systems.

Conclusions. The current state of the organization of emergency medical teams expresses the need to conceive from the present the organization of future teams in accordance with international standards, given the dangers that these phenomena determine in the health of individuals, population groups. and the network of health institutions.
