Abstract

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can have serious consequences for the health of the newborn and the mother, that is why this research aimed to develop educational strategies to prevent gestational diabetes in patients who attend the Type C Health Center “Nueva San Rafael” from the city of Esmeraldas. As a methodology, it had a quantitative approach, supported by research such as descriptive, bibliographic, field and action, together with methods such as inductive-deductive, analytical-synthetic and historical-logical that allowed the development and application of the questionnaire as a research instrument. It was highlighted among the results that the average age of the pregnant women is mostly 15 to 20 years old (57%), single (41%), Afro-Ecuadorian (59%), with a low educational level (primary 43%), 56% of households have an income of less than 400 USD per month, in addition to this there is a lack of adherence to prenatal controls (38%), in addition to limited knowledge about risk factors and management of gestational diabetes (57%), In this context, it is necessary to generate educational strategies focused on reducing modifiable risk factors in pregnant women and newborns.
