Abstract

The present study addresses oral hygiene habits in children with Down syndrome, highlighting their importance in maintaining adequate oral health and preventing diseases such as cavities and periodontal disease. The research was carried out through a survey applied to parents of children between 8 and 19 years old from the "Beatriz Jarrín" Specialized Educational Unit, through which significant deficiencies in oral hygiene practices were identified. The results showed that more than 50 % of the children did not visit the dentist in the last six months, and 60% did not use mouthwash regularly. Additionally, only 43 % brush their teeth after each meal. These deficiencies are related to factors such as the caregivers' lack of knowledge and the children's motor limitations, which makes it difficult to maintain correct oral hygiene. As a culmination of the research, an educational program aimed at parents and guardians was proposed, the objective of which is to improve the oral hygiene habits of children with Down syndrome through educational workshops, teaching materials and personalized monitoring. This approach seeks to encourage a greater frequency of dental visits and better use of oral hygiene tools, contributing to a better quality of life for these children.
