Abstract

Mucinous cystadenoma of the ovary is a relatively common benign tumor that typically occurs in women of reproductive age, characterized by a multilocular mass containing mucinous fluid. Although generally asymptomatic, it can reach a considerable size and cause abdominal symptoms. The objective of this study was to analyze a clinical case of ovarian mucinous cystadenoma in a 29-year-old patient treated at the Basic Hospital of Chimborazo Province, Ecuador. This descriptive and retrospective study was based on a review of the patient’s medical history, including physical examinations, imaging studies, surgical intervention, and histopathological analysis. The patient presented with persistent abdominal pain and underwent exploratory laparotomy, during which a 15 cm mass was identified and resected from the right ovary, later confirmed as a mucinous cystadenoma through histopathological analysis. The peritoneal fluid was negative for malignant cells. The patient had a favorable postoperative recovery without complications. Timely surgical intervention and diagnostic confirmation were essential for the successful management of this case. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of a comprehensive clinical evaluation, the use of imaging studies, and precise surgical intervention in the management of ovarian mucinous cystadenomas, emphasizing the need for long-term follow-up to detect possible recurrences.
