Abstract

The 38 % silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has gained popularity in dentistry for its ability to halt dental caries, especially in vulnerable populations and resource-limited settings. However, its use is limited by aesthetic concerns due to the black staining it causes on treated teeth. The objective of the study was to interpret the use of 38 % silver diamine fluoride as a cariostatic therapy through a literature review. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed to identify relevant studies published in the last five years. The results indicate that SDF is highly effective in halting the progression of dental caries compared to other treatments like dental sealants and shows a favorable safety profile. However, dental staining remains a significant barrier to its acceptance, and the stability of the SDF solution is another challenge that limits its long-term clinical application. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of patient education to improve treatment acceptance. Despite these challenges, SDF presents itself as a valuable tool in the fight against dental caries, especially in low-resource settings. In conclusion, while SDF offers an effective and accessible solution for caries management, future research should focus on improving its formulation and evaluating its acceptance in various cultural and socioeconomic contexts to maximize its impact on global dental health.
