Abstract

Introduction: Theses should be disseminated through formal channels such as scientific journals, but few are published.

Objective: To determine the factors associated with the publication of bachelor's theses.

Methods: A cross-sectional bibliometric study was designed to explore the bachelor's theses in the Stomatology repository of the Universidad Científica del Sur, Lima, Peru, during the period 2018-2023. The first author's first and last names were searched in the Scopus, Medline, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases to verify the publication of the thesis.

Results: Ninety-two theses were evaluated: 89 of them were written by one student (three were written in pairs). Most were defended during 2023 (n = 31). Thirty-five point nine percent were published as original articles in an indexed scientific journal (n = 33). A significant association was found between the gender of the thesis authors and the publication of the thesis (p < 0.05), and between the research status of the supervisor and the frequency of publication (p < 0.05).

Conclusions: The frequency of thesis publication as original articles was associated with the gender of the students and the research status of the thesis supervisor. There was no evidence that the methodological design, the technique used, the grade obtained, the academic degree, or the professional title of the supervisor influenced a higher probability of publication.
