Abstract

Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) has undergone significant changes throughout history due to the contributions of two notable figures, David Sackett and Archie Cochrane. The ideas and contributions of these illustrious individuals have helped improve the quality of medical care and clinical decision-making with the best available scientific evidence. The objective of this study was to interpret the historical aspects of Evidence-Based Medicine through a literature review. An exhaustive and systematic search was conducted in English, Spanish, and Portuguese using the PubMed and Redalyc search engines, as well as the Epistemonikos meta-search engine (Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, LILACS, PsycINFO, DARE, The Campbell Collaboration Online Library, EPPI-Centre Evidence Library, JBI Database of Systematic Reviews and Implementation). The search strategy used terms such as: (((Historical Aspects [Title/Abstract]) OR (Historical notes[Title/Abstract])) AND (Evidence-Based Medicine[Title/Abstract])) OR (Medicine Evidence-Based[Title/Abstract]). A total of 25 articles were used for development after screening through established inclusion and exclusion criteria. It was evidenced that historical events have greatly helped to establish the fundamental principles of Evidence-Based Medicine. It is concluded that to improve medical care, the best available evidence should be used in a sensible and truthful manner to achieve better results in clinical decision-making practices.
