Abstract

Introduction: Arterial hypertension is the major cause of morbi-mortality in many countries.
Objective: To compare the heart rate of patients in a clinic in the city of Riobamba, Ecuador, at three times of the day (morning, afternoon and evening) using a nursing approach.
Methods:
The study sample consisted of 100 patients attended at the Riobamba clinic. The study was relational and was classified as observational, prospective, longitudinal and analytical. The Friedman nonparametric test was used, after verifying with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test that not all the data were normal. Results: The mean age was 46.40 years, with a standard deviation of 17.512 and a standard error of 1.751 years. Of the participants, 41.0 % were male and 59.0 % were female. The mean morning heart rate was 87.32 beats per minute, while the mean evening heart rate was 88.74 and the mean nighttime heart rate was 84.42. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test revealed that the morning and evening heart rates exhibited a distribution not significantly different from normality (p > 0.05), while the evening heart rate showed a significant deviation from the normal distribution (p=0.003). Friedman's test results reveal significant differences in heart rates between times of day (Chi-square = 146.363, gl = 2, p<0.001).
Conclusions:
The alternative hypothesis was accepted, given that at least one median heart rate at the three times of day was different.
