Abstract

Objective: To demonstrate the efficacy of music in the management of pain in patients assisted by nurses in a hospital in the Ecuador.
Methods:
Analytical, experimental, prospective and longitudinal study. The sample consisted of 50 patients in each group (control and experimental), with the aim of examining the impact of musical intervention on pain management. The Mann-Whitney U test was used.
Results:
The mean age was 46.63 years (SD = 17.972). Before the intervention, the mean range for pain intensity was similar between the control group (51.18) and the experimental group (49.82), with sums of ranges close (2559 and 2491 respectively). After the intervention, the control group presented a higher average range (63.58) compared to the experimental group (37.42), which was also reflected in the sums of ranges (3179 and 1871 respectively). Before the intervention, no statistically significant differences in pain intensity were found between the control and experimental groups (U = 1216, p = 0.803). After the intervention, highly significant differences were evident between the groups (U = 596, p < 0.001), with pain levels being lower in the experimental group.
Conclusions: The musical intervention had a positive and statistically significant effect on the reduction of pain intensity experienced by the patients.
