Abstract

The Ecuadorian diaspora presents a unique complexity in managing their social relationships and emotional connections due to the influence of emotional, social, and technological factors. The objective of this study was to analyze how Ecuadorians residing abroad experience and manage their social relationships and emotional connections through digital environments. A structured questionnaire based on the "Diaspora Mapping Toolkit" by UNU-MERIT, validated by the International Organization for Migration, was used. The sample consisted of 129 Ecuadorians living in various countries, selected through social media groups. The results revealed that most participants do not feel an emotional connection to their current place of residence, reflecting the complexity of defining home in the diaspora. However, communication technologies emerge as crucial tools for maintaining ties with home, facilitating contact with roots and social networks. An emotional connection duality with the place of origin and destination was identified, highlighting that the concept of home acquires different meanings and functions for migrants. The conclusions emphasize that the perception of home in the diaspora is multifaceted, influenced by emotional adaptability and social interactions facilitated by technology. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the social and emotional dynamics of Ecuadorians in the diaspora and the relevance of digital technologies in their migratory experiences.
