Abstract

Introduction: Water contamination with mercury is a global problem, with several alternative solutions whose effects must be evaluated in order to select the most optimal treatment.

Objective: To evaluate the adsorption capacity of magnetite nanoparticles using ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) and ferric chloride (FeCl3) precursors, comparing them with the use of commercial magnetite nanoparticles.

Methods: The magnetite synthesis was carried out by co-precipitation using ferrous sulfate and ferric chloride, and sodium hydroxide as precipitating agent, to obtain magnetite nanoparticles the solution reaches a pH range of 8-12. Subsequently, it was characterized by SEM, determining morphology and particle size, and IR spectrophotometry analysis to verify composition. Additionally, commercial magnetite nanoparticles were purchased to compare the effectiveness of the two materials. Mercury removal was evaluated using adsorption spectrophotometry equipment.

Results: The synthesized and commercial nanoparticles achieve a mercury removal percentage of around 75% and 100% respectively (Contact time-4 hours). When analyzing the pH, the highest adsorption capacity is reached at a value of 7 and decreases when the solution becomes basic. The commercial nanoparticles (0.963 to 0.482 µm) present greater uniformity than the synthesized ones (1.836 to 0.113 µm).

Conclusions: Commercial magnetite nanoparticles have better efficiency in removing mercury, reaching a percentage of 100% in the first 10 min, while the synthesized nanoparticles have a removal of 74.88% in 4 hours.
