Abstract

The article examines the impact of urinary incontinence (UI) medications on the quality of life of older adults in Ecuador. UI significantly affects the lives of older adults, with a prevalence of 16 % in women over 65 years old in the country. The types of UI and the anatomy related to urinary function are discussed.

It is highlighted that UI medications, such as anticholinergics and adrenergic agonists, are common treatment options. However, their effectiveness and tolerability vary, and they may be associated with adverse effects. An observational study was conducted at the General Hospital Quevedo to evaluate the effectiveness of these treatments.

The sample selection was done through the Snowball Method. Results show that 9.5 % of residents use UI medications. Improvement was observed in 38.5 % of treated patients, while an equal percentage did not experience significant improvements. Through the use of Fuzzy Cognitive Maps, sociocultural and economic factors influencing the accessibility and use of medications were identified, such as disease

perception, cultural beliefs, and medication costs.

Interventions are proposed to improve accessibility to healthcare services, education about UI, and policies for affordable medication prices. These actions aim to address identified challenges and improve the quality of life of older adults with UI in Ecuador.
