Abstract

Introduction: Diabetic foot is a frequent complication of diabetes and can be the result of several risk factors.

Objective: The objective of the study was to predict the probability of amputations in patients with diabetic foot in the province of Ecuador, by means of logistic regression.

Methods: The study carried out corresponded to the predictive level of research and was classified as observational, longitudinal, prospective and analytical. The sample of this study comprised 134 patients diagnosed with diabetic foot. SPSS version 27 software was used to perform binary logistic regression analysis.

Results: Stepwise binary logistic regression analysis did not identify significant predictors of amputation among the variables evaluated. The only predictor that approached significance was smoking history (OR 1.884, p=0.083). The final model, which included smoking history and 6 other variables, explained between 3.6 % and 5.3 % of the variability in amputation and had an overall classification ability between 57.5 % and 59.7 %.

Conclusions: In this study, none of the clinical and demographic variables evaluated showed a statistically significant association with the probability of amputation in patients with diabetic foot. The binary logistic regression model developed had limited ability to predict amputations. Further studies are required to identify reliable predictors of this adverse outcome in patients with diabetic foot in the province of Ecuador.
