Abstract

Objective: To compare the severity of HIV/AIDS according to sex in patients in a hospital in Ambato, Ecuador.

Methods: This was a relational, observational, retrospective, analytical and cross-sectional study. The study population consisted of 102 patients with HIV/AIDS treated in a hospital in Ambato, Ecuador, during the year 2022. The test statistic used was U MANN-WHITNEY.

Results: In men, the severity of HIV/AIDS was distributed as follows: 24.6 % acute HIV infection; 29.8 % chronic or asymptomatic infection; 19.3 % early symptomatic disease and 26.3 % AIDS. In women, the distribution was: 17.8 % acute infection; 20 % chronic infection; 35.6 % early symptomatic disease and 26.7 % AIDS. A higher proportion of women with early symptomatic disease was observed compared to men (35.6 % vs. 19.3 %), while in the other disease stages the proportions were similar.

Conclusions: Although the mean rank was higher in women, this difference was not statistically significant according to the Mann-Whitney U test. It is concluded that in this study no differences were found in the severity of HIV/AIDS between both sexes.
