Analysis of differences in hemoglobin before and after delivery in patients from Tulcan, Ecuador

Abstract

Introduction: The hemoglobin concentration in the mother is a crucial element to evaluate her health, since the presence of anemia or other hemoglobin-related disorders can significantly affect her well-being and the development of the fetus.

Objective: To analyze significant differences in hemoglobin values before and after delivery in patients from a hospital in Tulcán, Ecuador.

Methods: The study was relational, longitudinal, prospective, observational and analytical. The sample consisted of 159 patients attending a hospital in Tulcán, Ecuador. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used.

Results: The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test indicated that the sample distribution did not conform to a normal distribution. The asymptotic significance, which was less than 0.001, indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the observed distribution and the normal distribution. There were 143 cases (89.94 %) where maternal hemoglobin after the studied period was lower than maternal hemoglobin before, with a mean range of 85.71 and a total sum of ranges of 12256.00. The Z-statistic value was quite negative and its significance was less than 0.001, indicating that there was a significant difference between the maternal hemoglobin measurements before and after the studied period.

Conclusions: The null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. This showed that there was statistical evidence that there was a significant difference in maternal hemoglobin levels before and after the period analyzed.
