Abstract

Introduction: Knowing the attitude of university students towards alcoholism will allow us to identify possible areas of intervention and prevention to promote healthy behaviors and reduce the risk of problems associated with alcohol consumption in this demographic group.

Objective: The objective was to analyze the attitude towards alcoholism among university students.

Methods: The study was longitudinal, experimental, analytical and prospective. The study population consisted of 102 university students. Individuales interviews were conducted and McNemar's test was applied.

Results: Before the intervention, 52,9% of the participants had a positive attitude towards alcoholism, while 47,1% had a negative attitude. After the intervention, 92,2% developed a positive attitude, and only 7,8% maintained a negative attitude. In addition, no student with an initial positive attitude changed to negative, and only 7,8% of those with an initial negative attitude maintained it. The value of 40 obtained in McNemar's Test and its bilateral exact significance of ˂0,001 indicated a highly significant association between attitudes before and after the educational intervention on alcoholism.

Conclusions: The results of the study support the alternative hypothesis, demonstrating that the implemented educational intervention succeeds in perceptibly modifying students' attitudes towards alcoholism.
