Abstract

Introduction: Priapism is characterized by prolonged and persistent penile erection that is not linked to sexual desire.

Objective: To associate the severity of COVID-19 to priapism in patients from the Ecuador.

Methods: The study was retrospective, observational, cross-sectional and analytical. Seventy-eight patients attended in a hospital in the Ecuadorian city of Puyo, in the province of Pastaza, were studied. To analyze the association between variables, the chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were applied using SPSS software (v. 26 64-bit edition).

Results: The mean age was 41.56 years, with a standard deviation of 13.624 and a range from 18 to 64 years. 51.3 % of patients had no history of priapism. Of the patients without priapism, 71.8 % did not require mechanical ventilation, whereas 66.7 % of the patients with priapism did. Pearson's chi-square, continuity correction and likelihood ratio values indicated that the relationship was statistically significant (p < 0.001 in all cases). Fisher's exact test reinforced this conclusion, with a bilateral and unilateral significance of 0.001. The linear by linear association, also significant (p < 0.001), supported the relationship between these key variables in the study.

Conclusions: This study reveals a significant association between the severity of COVID-19, as measured by the need for mechanical ventilation, and the incidence of priapism in the patients studied.
