Accelerating online education and educational technology in the COVID-19 era: implications for the future of higher education

Abstract

Introduction: This research focuses on evaluating the experience of students from technological higher education institutions in the city of Quito during the transition to online education due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: The study involved 48 students from five institutions during the period from April to July 2023. Descriptive statistics and correlations were employed to analyze students' perceptions in various aspects of online education.

Results: The results highlight an overall high satisfaction of students with online classes, evidenced by an average score of 4.375 in the 'Level of satisfaction with online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic.' The quality of didactic material received the highest score (4.417), indicating that educational resources were perceived as clear and beneficial. Likewise, there was notable satisfaction with the provided technical support (Mean = 4.375). The correlation analysis revealed a significant positive connection between satisfaction with online classes and the ease of technology use (r=0.773), emphasizing the importance of the accessibility and usability of online platforms for student satisfaction.

Conclusions: These findings suggest that online education has been well-received by students in technological higher education in Quito, highlighting areas of success and indicating key aspects for improving future implementations of online education.
