Abstract

Introduction: The efficacy of nicotine replacement therapies is crucial to help smokers quit.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of nicotine replacement therapies in smokers in Riobamba, Ecuador.

Methods: The study corresponded to the explanatory level, being classified as analytical, experimental, longitudinal and prospective. A total of 105 subjects were randomly divided into three groups of 35 members each, differentiated by the type of nicotine replacement therapy (gum, skin patch, nicotine inhaler). One-factor ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test were applied.

Results: The mean difference in the number of cigarettes smoked was recorded highest for the Skin Patch therapy group (7.63), followed by Gum (6.74) and then Nicotine Inhaler (5.09). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a significant difference between treatment groups in relation to cigarette smoking reduction (F (2,102) = 3.237, p = 0.043). Mean differences were observed for each pairwise comparison: between Gum and Skin Patch (-0.886 and p=0.659); between Gum and Nicotine Inhaler (1.657 and p=0.236); and between Skin Patch and Nicotine Inhaler (2.543 and p=0.036).

Conclusions: The evidence found partially supported the alternative hypothesis (H1) in the ANOVA, indicating significant differences between at least two of the nicotine replacement therapy methods in reducing cigarette consumption.
