Abstract

Introduction: Raynaud's disease is a disorder in which vascular spasms caused by exposure to cold or emotional stress disrupt blood flow to specific areas.

Objective: To relate Raynaud's disease to sex, cold exposure, smoking, and family history in patients from a hospital in Tungurahua, Ecuador.

Methods: The study was a relational, analytical, observational, prospective and cross-sectional research study. The sample consisted of 58 patients. The simple random sampling technique was used. The Phi coefficient was used.

Results: There was almost equal distribution between sexes (48.4 % women and 51.6 % men). No significant association was found between Raynaud's disease and sex (Phi coefficient = 0.002, p = 0.986). All Raynaud's patients were exposed to cold, demonstrating a significant relationship between the disease and cold exposure (Phi = 0.838, p < 0.001). The presence of smoking was high in Raynaud's patients (83.9 %). A significant association was identified between Raynaud's disease and smoking (Phi = 0.654, p < 0.001). Regarding family history, 51.6 % of Raynaud's patients had a family history and 48.4% did not (Phi = 0.302, p = 0.021).
