Abstract

Introduction: During pregnancy, the body undergoes significant changes that can affect the weight and body composition of women.

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare the averages in repeated measures of Body Mass Index in pregnant patients in the city of Santo Domingo, Ecuador.

Methods: The study population consisted of a total of 155 pregnant patients attended in a health center located in Santo Domingo, Ecuador. It corresponded to the relational research level, being analytical, retrospective, observational and longitudinal. It was based on the hypothesis that BMI after is different from BMI before (H1). SPSS version 25 software was used to develop the Student's t-test for related samples.

Results: It was observed that the average BMI before pregnancy was 27.02 kg/m², with a standard deviation of 3.775 and a mean standard error of 0.303. After pregnancy and delivery, the average BMI was 27.72 kg/m², with a standard deviation of 4.661 and a mean standard error of 0.374. These data showed a slight increase in mean BMI after pregnancy compared to pre-pregnancy BMI.

Conclusions: A slight increase in the BMI of pregnant patients was observed after the gestation period compared to the values recorded before pregnancy. This finding supports the hypothesis put forward by the researchers (H1), which suggests that there is a significant difference between pre- and post-pregnancy BMI.
