Abstract

Introduction: Chronic pain is a significant situation affecting many people.

Objective: Conduct an interpretive analysis on chronic pain

Methods: The study corresponded to the exploratory research level, and relied on hermeneutics to interpret the systematic review carried out with the PRISMA 2020 methodology on chronic pain. The research was observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective. A total of 18 articles were finally reviewed in the PubMed database (period 2020-2023).

Results: The comprehensive review of 18 studies revealed a complex interplay between physical, psychological and social aspects in the experience and management of chronic pain. The overall prevalence of chronic pain was highlighted, with significant individual and socio-economic impact. A marked dependence on the use of drugs, especially opioids, for its treatment was evidenced, raising the need to explore non-pharmacological alternatives. The importance of the biopsychosocial approach in understanding chronic pain was highlighted, as was the relevance that therapeutic interventions such as mindfulness meditation and spinal cord stimulation have. These findings underlined the urgent need for comprehensive, multidisciplinary strategies to improve chronic pain management and quality of life for those suffering from chronic pain.

Conclusions: The literature review highlighted the complexity and wide range of approaches and challenges present in the management of chronic pain, underlining the need for a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to improve the care and quality of life of patients affected by this condition.
