Abstract

Introduction: Sleep quality is important for physical and mental health.

Objective: The objective of the study was to predict sleep quality using ordinal logistic regression in adult patients in Ecuador.

Methods: The study was predictive, observational, retrospective, analytical, and cross-sectional. A predictive model with ordinal logistic regression approach was created. The sample consisted of 92 patients. It was hypothesised that there is a significant relationship between at least one of the predictor variables (age, BMI, hours of exercise, and type of treatment for insomnia) and sleep quality in the patients studied, at a significance level of 5 %.

Results: A statistically significant association was found between sleep quality and variables such as age (estimated coefficient: -0.1, p-value < 0.001), BMI (estimated coefficient: -0.2, p-value = 0.087) and the average number of hours of weekly exercise (estimated coefficient: 1.2, p-value < 0.001). Certain treatments, such as cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (estimated coefficient: -20.1, p-value < 0.001) and sleep medication (estimated coefficient: -19.6, p-value < 0.001), were found to be associated with different levels of sleep quality.

Conclusions: The study supported the alternative hypothesis (H1), finding a significant relationship between at least one of the predictor variables (in particular, types of treatment for insomnia) and sleep quality in the patients studied at the clinic.
