Abstract

Introduction: There is insufficient information in Ecuador on the complications of different COVID-19 vaccines in older adults.

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare the complications of different COVID-19 vaccines in older adults in a hospital in Ecuador.

Methods: The research was framed at a relational level and was defined as a retrospective, observational, analytical and cross-sectional study. We studied 320 individuals who received medical care for COVID-19 and had received three different vaccines against this pandemic: Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca and Sinovac. A simple error bar chart, as well as Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance, was used to contrast the severity of complications between the three sets of vaccines.

Results: Severity of COVID-19 was highest in the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine group (164.18), followed by the Sinovac vaccine group (162.82), and the AstraZeneca vaccine group (154.80), but these differences were not statistically significant. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis test indicated an H-statistic value of 0.730 and an asymptotic significance value of 0.694.

Conclusions: The bar chart and Kruskal-Wallis test showed no significant difference between vaccine groups in the severity of COVID-19. This suggested that the type of vaccine administered did not have a substantial impact on disease severity in this specific sample of patients.
