Abstract

Introduction: Chronic pain is a common problem in older adults and affects their quality of life.

Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of multimodal intervention for the improvement of chronic pain in older adult patients in a clinic in Ecuador.

Methods: This study was typified as longitudinal, analytical, experimental, and prospective, focusing on a single group of patients with measurements at two time points (before and after). The multimodal intervention programme lasted for three months. The Wilcoxon test was used with SPSS version 27 statistical software.

Results: A significant mean difference was observed between the initial pain (mean 5.16) and final pain (mean 3.28) experienced after the multimodal intervention. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test showed non-normality (test statistic 0.486 and p-value 0.000), so Student's t-test for related samples was not used. The Wilcoxon test was resorted to, which had a Z-value of -8.698 and an asymptotic significance (bilateral) of <0.001, indicating that the observed difference was highly unlikely to occur by pure chance.

Conclusions: According to the Wilcoxon test, there was statistically significant evidence of a difference in pain level before and after the multimodal intervention. Specifically, there was a significant reduction in pain at the end of the intervention compared to baseline pain, so H1 was accepted and the null hypothesis H0 was rejected.
