Abstract

Introduction: Analysis of risk factors for indwelling urinary catheter-associated in-hospital infections, such as comorbidities, will enable the development of more effective prevention and treatment strategies.

Objective: The objective of the study was to correlate in-hospital infections associated with indwelling urinary catheter-associated enterobacteria producing BLEE and cPPA with various comorbidities in patients at a clinic in Ecuador.

Methods: The study carried out corresponded to the relational research level and was retrospective, cross-sectional, observational and analytical. The study population consisted of 140 patients treated at the clinic. SPSS version 25 statistical software was used to carry out the statistical analysis, specifically Spearman's Rho correlation test.

Results: According to the results of Spearman's test, no statistically significant associations were found between the presence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections and comorbidities (Diabetes: Sig.=0.502; Cardiovascular diseases: Sig.=0.090; Renal diseases: Sig.=0.867; Cancer: Sig. =0.240; Neurological diseases: Sig.=0.867; Urinary tract obstruction: Sig.=0.170; and Immobility: Sig.=0.063), although perhaps a small exception should be made for Immobility for a possible marginal association due to its value being very close to the 0.05 threshold, which would require further investigation.

Conclusions: There was no evidence to reject the null hypothesis that there was no significant association between nosocomial infections and the seven comorbidities studied.
