Abstract

Introduction: Obesity is a medical condition characterised by an excessive accumulation of body fat that can have adverse health effects.

Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention with probiotic administration in obese patients in the city of Ambato, Ecuador.

Methods: This was an experimental, analytical, prospective and longitudinal study. The Student's t-test for related samples was applied using SPSS version 27 statistical software.

Results: The mean weight after the intervention (97.08 kg) was lower than the mean weight before the intervention (105.75 kg). The mean of the paired differences was -8.675 kg, indicating that, on average, patients lost approximately 8.675 kg of weight after the intervention. The bilateral significance value was <0.01, indicating that the difference in weight after intervention was highly significant. the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test statistic was 0.066, while the asymptotic significance was 0.200, suggesting that there was no significant evidence to reject the hypothesis that the distribution of differences is normal.

Conclusions: The intervention implemented, involving the administration of probiotics in obese patients, has a statistically significant effect on weight reduction. Based on the findings, it is suggested that probiotic administration be considered as an adjunct to weight control programmes in obese patients to promote beneficial outcomes.
