Abstract

Introduction: Comparison of treatments in patients with COVID-19 is essential to improve care for those affected by the disease.

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare survival in patients from Ecuador with COVID-19 clinically treated with oxygenation and antivirals in a health institution in the Amazon region.

Methods: The study was predictive and had an analytical approach. The study population consisted of 62 patients with COVID-19. In the first phase, the mean survival time of the patients was calculated, while in the second phase, the comparison of survival with oxygenation and antivirals was carried out. The Chi-square test and the Log Rank statistic (Mantel-Cox) were used to evaluate significant differences in survival distributions.

Results: The variable Oxygenation in the treatment of patients with COVID-19 was associated with a significant decrease in the risk of mortality compared to those who did not receive this treatment (B = -2.511, p=0.018). However, the variable Antivirals did not prove to have a statistically significant impact on patient survival (B = -0.427, p=0.467).

Conclusión: This study highlighted the efficacy of oxygenation as part of treatment in patients with COVID-19, being associated with a significant decrease in mortality risk. Furthermore, the evolution of mortality risk over time emphasized the need for continuous follow-up and adaptation of treatment strategies to improve patient survival.
