Abstract

Introduction: Asthma is a chronic airway disease that affects millions of people worldwide.

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare the effectiveness of asthma treatment strategies in patients in a health institution of Ecuador.

Methods: The study corresponded to the relational level and was prospective, experimental, longitudinal, and analytical. The study population consisted of 108 patients from a health institution in Ecuador, diagnosed with asthma. A crossover design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of three asthma treatment strategies: corticosteroid inhalers, bronchodilators, and trigger reduction therapies. Cochran's Q test was used using SPSS software.

Results: The mean effectiveness of corticosteroid inhalers was 0.57 (SD=0.497); that of bronchodilators was 0.50 (SD=0.502), and trigger reduction therapy had a mean effectiveness of 0.48 (SD=0.502). More patients found corticosteroid inhalers effective (57.4 %), followed closely by bronchodilators (50.0%), while trigger reduction therapy had a slightly lower response rate (48.1 %). Cochran's Q Test (χ²=1.976, p=0.372) showed no significant difference in the effectiveness of the strategies, supporting the null hypothesis.

Conclusions: This study found no statistically significant differences in the effectiveness of the three treatment strategies in reducing asthma symptoms patients.
