Abstract

Background: Emergency physicians are professionals who face highly stressful situations in their work routine due to the unpredictable and sometimes chaotic nature of their work. Analyzing how these professionals cope with the emotional and cognitive demands of their work and evaluating their psychological well-being based on their coping ability can help find risk factors for burnout syndrome.

Objective: To analyze the coping strategies used by emergency doctors in different medical centers in Ambato, as well as their burnout levels. Furthermore, we seek to identify possible differences in these strategies and levels of burnout depending on the age and work experience of the doctors.

Method: A cross-sectional and descriptive design was used, using online questionnaires to collect data from 58 emergency physicians in Ambato. The Stress Coping Questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory Method were applied to evaluate coping strategies and burnout levels. Statistical analyzes were carried out to analyze the collected data.

Results: Results revealed that the most common coping strategies among emergency physicians were positive reappraisal and seeking social support. In terms of burnout, medium levels of emotional exhaustion, moderate levels of depersonalization and high levels of personal fulfillment were found. Middle-aged physicians tended to use solution-focused strategies more than their peers. Significant correlations were observed between certain coping strategies and burnout levels, indicating that coping strategies are associated with job satisfaction and psychological well-being.
