Abstract

Introduction: Excessive alcohol consumption is a significant public health problem that can have serious consequences for the physical and mental health of individuals, as well as for society in general.

Objective: The objective of the study was to analyze the association between alcohol consumption and the presence of family history of alcoholism in patients of a clinic in the province of Pastaza in Ecuador.

Methods: The case-control study was cross-sectional, analytical, retrospective and observational, corresponding to the relational research level. The association between being an alcoholic and having a family history of alcoholism was measured using Chi-square association tests and Odds ratio in a population of 112 subjects from a clinic in the province of Pastaza, Ecuador.

Results: In the "Non-alcoholic" category, 76.8 % had no family history of alcoholism and 23.2 % did. In the "Alcoholic" category, 37.5 % had no family history of alcoholism and 62.5 % did. Overall, 57.1 % (N=64) had no family history of alcoholism, while 42.9 % did (N=48). The Chi-square value was 17.646 and the asymptotic significance (bilateral) was <0.01, indicating strong evidence of association between the two variables. The odds ratio for those with a family history of alcoholism was substantially higher (5.513), indicating a significantly elevated risk of alcohol consumption in this group.

Conclusions: It was concluded that the presence of a family history of alcoholism is strongly associated with an increased risk of alcohol consumption.
