Abstract

Introduction: Obesity is a global health problem that is associated with chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal problems, among others.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of diet and exercise intervention in obese Ecuadorian patients seen in a private clinic in the Sierra region of Ecuador.

Methods: This was an analytical, prospective, longitudinal study. Student's t-test for related samples was applied using SPSS version 26 statistical software. The diet and exercise program lasted four months.

Results: The results showed that the mean weight in kg before the intervention was 99.50, whereas the mean weight after the intervention was 92.16. The mean of the paired differences was calculated, which was -7.344, and statistics such as standard deviation (SD) and mean standard error were provided to support the analysis. The 95 % confidence interval for the difference showed that the differences ranged from -8.128 to -6.560. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality was 0.075, and the resulting P-value was 0.082, so that there was insufficient evidence to reject the normality of the difference variable.

Conclusions: It was concluded that the intervention consisting of dieting and exercise over a period of four months resulted in a significant weight reduction in obese patients.
